Get Ready For A Life-Changing And Beautiful Adventure To Itacare In Bahia, Brazil
Please join us in September – November 2023 along with our local partner ETIV do Brasil in the beautiful fishing village of Itacare, Southern Bahia. This unique area of tropical rainforest meets the Atlantic Ocean with beautiful beaches, jungles, waterfalls and wildlife all around. Located in the North-Eastern region of Brazil, Bahia has a deep Afro-Brazilian culture famous for its unique art, music, dance and traditions including Capoeira and Samba.
We are so happy to return in 2023 for SwimTayka’s four annual project in beautiful Itacare. This programme runs for three months from September to November working in collaboration with local partner and NGO, ETIV do Brasil. This exciting programme will provide swimming lessons, drowning prevention and environmental water stewardship courses. Volunteer applications are now open, so if you would like to find out more, please complete the online form below.
In 2023, we aim to bring on board over 100 children from Itacare to complete the SwimTayka program. The long-term goal is to create a self-sustaining swimming programme up and running by the Itacare community. We will then reach out to other local communities in the area building relationships for future exchanges and swimming projects, expanding the positive impact throughout the entire coastal area of Bahia.

SwimTayka Project Fundraising Overview:
Each volunteer is required to raise a target donation amount in order to join a SwimTayka programme. We carefully calculate all projected costs for each unique project and then provide volunteers with a fundraising target that covers most in-country expenses, while excluding any airfare costs.
What is Included in the SwimTayka Fundraising Target:
- Accommodation for the entire duration of the project
- All required in-country ground transportation from arrival to departure
- The full SwimTayka programme uniform
- Donations of equipment and supplies to local partners
- A contribution to SwimTayka administrative costs
What is NOT Included in the Fundraising Target:
- All international and domestic airfare to, from and within the project country
- Recommended traveller’s insurance to cover illness, injury, or emergency evacuation
- Any necessary visa application fees, which vary by nationality
- Optional extended personal leisure travel before/after the project
In summary, volunteers must pay for international flights, visas, insurance and any extra travel themselves, on top of meeting the SwimTayka fundraising target which covers in-country expenses. Meeting the target ensures we can deliver our programmes while keeping costs low for our local partners.
Language Requirement
We strongly recommend volunteers with little or no knowledge of the Portuguese language take lessons every day in the weeks before departing for Brasil. Not many people in Bahia speak English, so it is essential volunteers learn at least basic if not intermediate Portuguese before arrival. This skill also improves the safety of our program for the children you will be teaching.
