Changing Lives in Peru: How One Conversation Opened up a World of Opportunity

At SwimTayka, we believe that the ability to swim is more than just a life skill - it is a passport to freedom, confidence, and safety. Nowhere is this clearer than in our work in Peru, where we partner with the incredible team at Otra Cosa Network. A recent story from the beaches of Huanchaco perfectly captures why these programmes are so vital, and how they shatter barriers that go far deeper than just the water's edge.

A Barrier Beyond the Water

Imagine standing on a beach, watching the waves roll in, but being forbidden from ever stepping foot in them. For one eight-year-old boy from a local shanty town, this was his reality. Mateo wasn’t being kept away out of unkindness, but out of fear. His parents couldn’t swim, and their natural instinct was to protect their son from a danger they didn’t understand. In this region, the ocean isn't just divided by fear, it is divided by social class. In a community where classes rarely mix, and where many mothers work long hours as maids, access to swimming lessons is often an unreachable luxury. The beach might be free, but the opportunity to enjoy it safely felt reserved for someone else.

The Moment Everything Changed

The trajectory of Mateo’s life shifted on the day he saw Juany, the head of Otra Cosa Network, swimming in the sea. Driven by pure curiosity and a longing to join in, he approached her and said he wanted to learn. When Juany told him about our swimming classes, his face lit up. "Oh, please tell my mother," he begged. Juany did exactly that. She sought out the parents, listened to their fears, and gently reassured them. By explaining the safety measures and the supportive environment SwimTayka and Otra Cosa Network provide, she persuaded them to give him a chance.

From Fear to Freedom

The results have been nothing short of extraordinary. Not only did Mateo join the programme, but he has excelled as a swimmer. A child who was once restricted to the dry sand is now navigating the water with skill and confidence. His parents, no longer fearful, are filled with immense gratitude.

Why Your Support Matters

This is the true value of SwimTayka’s programmes. We aren’t just teaching children how to swim, we are:
  • Breaking generational cycles of fear by proving that drowning is preventable.
  • Bridging social divides by giving all children access to the same opportunities.
  • Empowering communities through local partnerships with fantastic organisations like Otra Cosa Network.
Every donation, every volunteer, and every share helps us reach another child who is currently standing on the shoreline, waiting for their chance to dive in. Want to help us make a splash where it matters most? You can make a donation here.
