A Weekend of Milestones and Memories: Dover Training Weekend with SwimTayka

This past weekend in Dover was one to remember. Swimmers from all corners of the UK and beyond came together, united by a shared love of the water and a commitment to personal growth. From start to finish, the weekend was filled with moments of determination, connection, and celebration.

Things kicked off on Friday evening with a relaxed swim in the calm waters of Dover harbour. It was the perfect way to ease into the weekend, leaving behind the stresses of the week. Swimmers shared stories, laughter, and plans for the days ahead, all while enjoying the light-hearted camaraderie that makes SwimTayka feel like a big family.

Saturday morning brought its own set of challenges, but nothing we couldn’t handle together. As teams prepared for their boat training sessions, we faced an unexpected hiccup when one of the key support boats, Anastasia, broke down. But with quick thinking and teamwork, the SwimTayka crew made sure the training continued. Thanks to the availability of Pegasus and the flexibility of everyone involved, two teams were able to get back on the water. It was a true reminder of the resilience and adaptability that are at the heart of our community.

While boat plans were being adjusted, around 70 swimmers gathered on Swimmer Beach for the morning briefing. Bryan, Scotty, and Neil shared essential safety tips, swim routes, and a healthy dose of motivation. Swimmers—both seasoned and first-timers—listened intently, soaking up advice that would carry them through the weekend’s swims. The sense of community was palpable, with everyone supporting each other, sharing tips, and offering encouragement.

With spirits high, many swimmers jumped into the harbour for their qualifier swims. The sight was truly inspiring: swimmers pushing through the water, supported by teammates cheering from the shore and Stephen’s expert RIB crew providing a safety net. Completing a qualifier swim is no small feat, and each swimmer who emerged from the water was met with well-deserved cheers and high-fives. It was a powerful reminder of how much can be achieved with determination and support.

The afternoon brought a welcome change of pace with a social swim. It was a chance for everyone to relax, enjoy the water, and swap stories from the morning’s adventures. There was laughter, camaraderie, and a shared sense of accomplishment.

As the sun set, we gathered at Cullins Yard to hear Scotty’s inspiring talk. His stories—full of humour, resilience, and reflections on his own Channel swims—captivated us all. From the cautionary tale of silver-painted fingernails to the recitation of Robert Service’s poetry, Scotty’s words reminded us that swimming isn’t just about physical strength; it’s about mental grit, determination, and finding joy even in the tough moments.

The day wrapped up with a magical night swim in the harbour. Swimmers adorned with Adventure lights, glowsticks, and tow-floats entered the cool water, testing their skills and confidence under the stars. The night swim was both a challenge and a celebration—a way to embrace the unknown and come out stronger on the other side.

Sunday morning saw the final qualifier swims, with swimmers cheered on by friends and teammates. The beach was filled with smiles, congratulations, and a sense of collective achievement. As the last swimmers left the water, it was clear that this weekend wasn’t just about swimming—it was about coming together, supporting each other, and building memories that will last a lifetime.

A huge thank you to everyone—swimmers, volunteers, boat crews, and supporters—who made this weekend so special. Together, we’re not just preparing for swims; we’re creating a community of encouragement, resilience, and hope, one stroke at a time.
